How do feel about yourself when you look in the mirror? Are you comfortable in your own skin? Are you having a hard time sleeping at night? Would you like to feel A LOT better about yourself? How much weight do you need to lose to start seeing significant health benefits?
We answer all these questions and more today.
We spoke to Dr. Gerald Hankle, a doctor who specializes in weight loss. Dr. Hankle spoke about how just losing a little weight can have amazing benefits. Here is what he tells his patients.
When you lose just 5% t0 10% of your body weight, you will instantly see significant health benefits, such as reducing risk factors of developing type 2 diabetes and dramatically lowering your blood pressure.
LOSING 5% TO 10% OF YOUR BODY WEIGHT WILL ALSO HELP YOU:
- Lower the cholesterol levels in your body
- Reduce many aches and pains
- Improve your mobility (e.g., making getting off the couch easier!)
- Improve your glucose levels
- Help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep
- Reduce your risk of sleep apnea
- Reduce your dependency on prescription medications
- Reduce the risk of certain cancers
- Can improve your breathing
- Improve your mental state… Losing weight will make you feel great!
Dr. Hankle recommends that you cut your ties with people who are unhealthy for your diet. This might be hard if it’s a family member. But you need to understand that it is almost impossible to lose weight if your friends and family are stuffing their faces with junk food. Either get them on board with your weight loss plan or distance yourself from them.
The holidays are just around the corner and one great piece of advice for BEFORE you go to any dinner parties, or before you prepare a huge holiday meal, first EAT SOMETHING filling and healthy. A protein bar or a bowl of oatmeal with fresh strawberries will keep your belly full and your hunger at bay.
Do a full body work-out AT LEAST three (3) times a week. You need to do both a cardiovascular and a weight regiment. Choose something you really love to do like swimming, biking, tennis, or a long, fast, power walk.
Finally, don’t blame your weight on genetics, saying for example that “my family is big boned” or “we are Norwegian, so we tend to be big.” Your personal lifestyle makes you the way you are and your lifestyle becomes your identity. Don’t blame it on anything or anyone else! It’s on your shoulders. Get moving!

Great blog post! Thank you for reminding me that the holidays are around the corner and the importance of being careful around eating. Halloween is often the start of “the slide” for me!
